Collier's February 1953

While at Vintage City I nearly fell over when I saw their new display of vintage magazines.  I bought quite a few because they are like little time capsules! 

One of the magazines I bought at Vintage City was this 1953 Collier's with the grocery shopping mom with her rambunctious boys on the cover.

I get such a kick out of this refrigerator, stove, sink combo every time I see an advertisement for it!

 





 

I was surprised to see an article about VA Hospitals including the one that used to stand tall in our little city.  This hospital no longer exists and from what I gleaned from the article, was never needed.  Part of me was sad that they built the thing so big when it wasn't needed, but part of me was thankful that the need wasn't there.  It wasn't FULL of wounded men and women coming home from the war. The building used to sit somewhere on the land where Burdick Job Corps is now, west of MSU.

 

 

And I just LOVE when there are little notes jotted down in the margins of magazines or catalogs! It gives them a personal touch and makes me wonder who the scribbler was. I'm not sure what all the notes mean.  Sweetheart 3:45-4 KFYR (KFYR was a radio and TV station in Bismarck ND back in the 1950s).  Dragnet Sun NBC.

I thought this cartoon was quite funny. "It's a father!  I'm a girl!  I'm a girl!"

 

 

The short story "The Little Bride" was quite interesting.  It was about a newly married bride (the dark haired woman in the picture below) who has had a fight with her husband and comes home for a spell.  She tells her sorrows to her younger sister (also pictured) and her mother.  The wise mother of the new bride explains that she doesn't want to hear it....the bride needs to hike up her big-girl panties and head back home to work things out with her husband.

Vintage City Haul--January 2018

Waaaaaay back in January (yes, that's how far behind I am...yes, I know it's ridiculous) the folks and I stopped into Vintage City.  I had Christmas money burning a hole in my pocket so I picked up a few items to love.

 

 

After swooning over their large assortment of vintage magazines, I picked out a few, many I'd never seen before like the Household Magazine from 1941, Child Life from 1953 and Parents' Magazine.  They are in GREAT condition and are like little time capsules.  I'll do a few posts about these in the future.

 

 

This Starlac box was calling my name (post coming soon).  I just love the graphics and the colors!

 

 

This pretty little table cloth was a fun find!  I thought the colors and motif seemed very "Valen-tiny" to me.  My turquoise cup and saucer (I bought years ago) matches perfectly!

 

 

 

I also purchases a few tea towels on this trip. Please forgive the wrinkles...I didn't have time to iron.

 

 

I was so tickled that my mom let me have the blue strawberry dish towel as I don't have one like it!

 

 

 And here is a bright sunny one perfect for the spring and summer months ahead.

Embroidery Project with Artiste Floss

In late March, I found myself wanting to embroider.  So I had some fun with some Artiste floss and the button hole stitch again.
 

 

I just LOVE these happy, springy colors!

 

 

 

 

 

That's just a sneak peek for now, as this is still a work in progress.  I am not too sure what to do with the white space around the circles.  I guess time will tell.

Borden's Starlac Box

 

One of my favorite finds, from my January trip into Vintage City, trip is this Borden's Starlac box with the powdered milk still inside!  (I know, eww, right?)   I just love the graphics and the colors on this box!

 

 

 

The box now sits on my shelf of vintage goodies above my desk in the kitchen.  I may put it away at some point to prevent fading.

Vintage 80s Commercial #5

According to my folks, they remember me saying, "I've just gotta have a My Little Pony or I'll die!"  Dramatic much?

 

I did end up with a My Little Pony Cotton Candy and I STILL have her. My daughter played with her for awhile when she was younger, and now she sits upon a shelf in our library.

Canister Decals Redo

Throughout the month of January, I went through somewhat of a Vintage craze.  I incorporated as much vintage style into my daily wardrobe, hair, and life as was possible.  My days were sprinkled with little vintage projects, including the one below where I changed the decal on my glass canisters.

 

First, I peeled the old decals off of the canister.  They are just printed pictures with clear, contact paper over them.  After a few years, they were looking pretty raggedy.

 

 

After finding some vintage clipart online, I printed them and went over the printings with colored pencils to brighten the colors and sharpen the edges up a bit.

Then I got out my clear contact paper and stuck them to the glass!  Easy-Peasy!

 

 

 

 

I hung a little red potholder behind, to add a little something to the bare wall.

My Gardens and Flowers

We are deep into the winter months.  The hours of daylight are short and I miss the green grass and flowers of our yard.  Here are just a few pictures of our flowers and rock gardens from the past summer.  Hopefully they will help to brighten your day!

...and south garden.  The flowers in my south garden didn't grow as big as in past years, I was very disappointed in them.

In 2017 my daughter planted a small vegetable garden.

 

 

And our trees!  I'm glad we have a couple of nice trees now.  I can see them from the window above my kitchen sink.

Christmas Embroidery Projects

Here are the stitching projects that I did throughout November and December.

The one farthest left was the first one I did and it has an embroidered fruit boarder.  Every time I see it I think of the 1949 LUX Theater radio production of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House because that's one of the shows I listened to (two evenings in a row) while working on it. 

 

I was so bummed out when the sun beams behind the strawberry baskets didn't was out.  I accidently washed them in WARM water instead of very COLD water.  An important embroidery lesson was learned and I will never forget...cold water!

 

 

I found this ADORABLE Aunt Martha pattern at my local Thrifty White Drug Store (that's where I find the best flour sack dish towels too!)

I whipped up this Market Day one using pretty Spring colors.
