Capper's Farmer Magazine June 1947

Here are some high-lights from my Capper's Farmer Magazine from June of 1947.  It's hard to imagine that my parents were just new babies about the time this rolled off the presses!

I wonder if any of my grandparents subscribed to this magazine.

 

Here is a nice farm implement ad.

 

 

I found the snippet below to be quite interesting.  Now a days, a gas or electrical company could possibly call to have your "unruly" dog put to sleep if it ever bit them...or maybe even sue you for a dog bite.  *sigh* we won't get into how different things are these days compared to the old days...not today anyway.  

  

 

 

 

 

 

Remember this guy at the top of the Good Year ad.  We are going to meet his dream girl later.

 

 

And there were always ads for clothes patterns. 

 

 

I would TOTALLY wear this dress around the house (below) if only I had the figure I did back when I was a young, thin, twenty-year-old.

 

 

This is a neat page.  How to can peas and keep your wash clean, white, and RIN-SO Bright!

This is such a great idea for faded Draperies!

 

Even though mine isn't very big, I am glad I have a pantry...now if I could just learn how to can I'd be on a roll!

 



 

 

There are always many articles and ads about canning in these old farm magazines.

 

 

And one can never forget to clean the milk/cream separator.  What a chore!

 

 

Love her dress!  She seems pretty happy to be feeding the chickens.

I leave you with this odd find.  I was just saying the other day I wanted a picture of a dinosaur pouring DDT into a bucket of water. 

(didn't they outlaw this stuff!?)

Embroidered Baking Day Apron Towel

Here is another little towel I worked on in February and March.  I gave it to my sister-in-law who kindly hosted Easter for my husband's family this year.  She is quite the good cook and bake. I thought it fitting to give her an apron towel because not so many years ago she made me an actual apron that I love!

 

 

 

Unfortunately I did not write any of the thread colors down!  Next time I will try to do better about that.

1949 February Ladies Home Journal

One of the neat-o magazines I picked up this past winter was this February of 1949 Ladies Home Journal.  It is jammed packed with colorful ads and articles!  Because there are so many, I will only be sharing a few of my favorites with you today.

 

 

The cover design was by illustrator Al Parker (1906-1985)---He did a number of Mother--Daughter covers for Ladies Home Journal over many years.

 

And here are a few ads to enjoy!

 

 

Oh I just love these Youngstown kitchens!  Back in the 1940s this was a high-class kitchen too.  My grandparents, like many families in this rural area, didn't have anything this fancy back in the 1940s.

 

 

I got a kick out of the small advertisement below.  It could be a predecessor of the more modern Zumba workout or even the "Sweatin' to the Oldies" workouts I used to see advertised on TV as a kid.  They say dancing is good exercise! 

 

I wonder how many of these Hotpoint ranges are still around, and if the "pushbuttons" still work. 

 

 

Maybe I'm just hungry but this cake looks good.  I don't think I've ever had a Chiffon cake.

 



 

Bon-Ami is my go-to cleaner to this day!  And I have one of those vintage styled cans she is holding.

Of course I don't USE the vintage one, I use the one I bought at the grocery store.  *sigh* it just isn't as cool as the old one.

 

 

Oooo more cake.

Above is a double add for Libby's.  That reminded me of the old jingle "When it says Libby's Libby's Libby's on the label label label..."  (I'll leave the Libby's ad from You Tube below, because now you probably have it stuck in your head too.)

Valentines Day Surprise

For Valentines Day 2018 my husband surprised me with a couple of items from Vintage City.

 

A fun and fruity tablecloth!

I had actually looked at his table cloth when I was there in January!

 

 

And another pretty apron!

 

 

He had visited there before I had with my folks.  Marla and Bill are good at keeping secrets haha!

I guess my family (and my vintage friends) know what I like!

Vintage Reading Book

Peter's Family is quite possibly my favorite vintage reader that I own.  It was published in 1942 by Scott, Foresman and Company, and has the most darling illustrations.

 

 

There is a part in the book where the children visit their grandparents on the farm.

 

 

Here is an old fashioned clothes line!

 

And a picket fence!

 



 

 

Ah, the magic of telephone lines. 

 

    And when the children return home they all have a barbeque in the backyard of their new home.  

 

 

It is all so sun-shiny happy it almost makes you want to toss your cookies, but I love it anyways.

Vintage City Haul--Feburary 2018 And Vintage Valentines

So, this happened WAY back in February (I need to catch up quite a bit with my blogging).  The folks and I took a second trip to Vintage City in February because they had vintage valentines for sale and I was greatly interested in purchasing some.

Of course, I walked away with much more than valentines!

The first thing I spotted was this AMAZING little purse from (I'm guessing) the 1940s.  For a Lincoln, I couldn't pass it up!

 

This just might be one of my favorite vintage purses!

 



 

We found the Valentines and I went a little crazy.  My mother also bought me some, so now I diffidently have a collection.

 

 

Here are a couple of my favorites.

 

 

Apparently they were both to Mary Ethel...one from Pauline and one from Luella.  I just love it when things have old names and writing on them, gives each one a little story to tell.

 

 

Next I found this beautiful table cloth.  I don't need another tablecloth, but every time I see one I just melt, and this one was so beautiful and in such good shape, I just couldn't leave it there.

 

 

Here it is, in its new home, on my kitchen table!

 This little apron, I had seen on previous visits, and finally decided to purchase it.  But my mom is clever and managed to purchase it for me without me knowing!  I tried it on and as she helped me to take it off, she turned around, quickly handed it to the owner to put with her items!  So it was a gift from my mom, how sweet!  Thanks mom! 

 

I just love the blue background color and the yellow edging.  It hangs in my laundry room, and I have a tiny bit of mending to do on the bottom.  It won't be worn because I don't want it to get dirty or stained, but it's really cute for display.

 



My mother also bought me a book and some old old old valentines.

This vintage book has so many ADORABLE illustrations, I will have to give it its own special blog post.

 

And here are the sweet little Whitney Mage valentines that are older than the ones above.  I'm pretty sure these are from the 1920s.  There is a really interesting website about valentine history (link is below) that helped me find the dates of my valentines...Oh goodness, I think I've discovered a new obsession (eye roll).
